Species At Risk

In the last 20 years, 70% of British Dormice have been lost.
In 2020, the Hedgehog made it onto the Red List of Endangered Species.
Hedgerow supports a vast wild ecosystem.
Hedge food-source and shelter is essential for:

MAMMALS
BIRDS
INSECTS
REPTILES and INVERTEBRATES.
The list of dependents is very long.
Many familiar species are now Red Listed as endangered, including
Yellowhammer
Mistle Thrush
Linnet
Whitethroat
A full list of categorised birds species is available here  www.songbird-survival.org.uk/learn-and-discover/bird-numbers?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwh4-wBhB3EiwAeJsppLCJHETeum4e1Q2xpaEr9NS91WLIS-6gHyELQWqJA-tjsAf9QzpSLBoCVWkQAvD_BwE

Hedgerow habitat, in contrast to other common habitats such as woodland and meadow,
supports the broadest scope of species in the UK. Many are in rapid decline.

The CPRE have long campaigned for the protection of hedgerows.
Their Shutterstock pictures clearly show what healthy hedgerows look like in context:

Of all common habitats, hedgerow holds the greatest range of foodstuff and the most secure shelter against harsh weather.
Therefore it stands to reason that this habitat (much of which is the residue of forests that covered Britain) supports the greatest range of species. Woodland, meadow and brush offer limited provisions, while marshland and ancient forest are no longer in abundance.

The National Trust have provided this statement on hedgerow policy and best practice:
